Hintergrund

Der Song wurde für den Film Ein Offizier und Gentleman als Schlusslied komponiert. Die Angefragte Jennifer Warnes schlug als Duett-Partner ihr Jugendidol Joe Cocker vor.[1]

Charterfolge

In den USA kam das Lied auf Platz 1 der Billboard Hot 100 und hielt diese Position für drei Wochen. Im Vereinigten Königreich erreichte Up Where We Belong Platz 7 in den Jahrescharts 1983.

Auszeichnungen

Up Where We Belong erhielt 1983 als bester Filmsong den Oscar. Die Auszeichnung ging allerdings nur an Jack Nitzsche, Buffy Sainte-Marie und Will Jennings. Die beiden Interpreten wurden nicht ausgezeichnet. Darüber hinaus gewann das Lied den Golden Globe Award als bester Original-Song. Joe Cocker und Jennifer Warnes wurden außerdem 1983 mit dem Grammy Award für die beste Darbietung eines Duos oder einer Gruppe mit Gesang in der Kategorie Pop ausgezeichnet.[2]

"Up Where We Belong" is a song written by Jack Nitzsche, Buffy Sainte-Marie and Will Jennings that was recorded by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes for the 1982 film An Officer and a Gentleman. Warnes was recommended to sing a song from the film because of her previous soundtrack successes, and she had the idea for the song to be a duet that she would perform with Cocker. Jennings selected various sections of the score by Nitzsche and Sainte-Marie in creating the structure of the song and added lyrics about the struggles of life and love and the obstacles that people attempt to dodge. It was released in July of that year to coincide with the release of the film.
