La canción apareció en la película La sirenita, compuesta y producida por Alan Menken y Howard Ashman, influenciada por el estilo musical calipso del Caribe.

En la película, la canción es una petición del cangrejo Sebastián implorando a Ariel que permanezca en el mar y se resista a su deseo de ser humana, con el fin de pasar su vida con el Príncipe Eric, de quien está enamorada. Sebastián le advierte de las luchas de la vida humana, y al mismo tiempo, expone las ventajas de una vida sin preocupaciones bajo el agua.

En el doblaje español la canción es interpretada por Vicente Borland y en el hispanoamericano por Michael Cruz.

Under the Sea von 1989 ist ein Lied aus dem Film Arielle, die Meerjungfrau. Geschrieben wurde es von Alan Menken (Musik) und Howard Ashman (Text) und ist dem Calypso zuzuordnen. Im Film versucht Sebastian, Arielle davon zu überzeugen, dass das Leben im Meer viel schöner ist als das auf dem Land und sie ihre Pläne, dorthin zu gehen, aufgeben sollte. Gesungen wird das Lied von Samuel E. Wright, dem Sprecher von Sebastian. In den deutschen Synchronisationen heißt das Lied Unter dem Meer oder Unten im Meer. In der ersten deutschen Synchronisation von 1989 übernahm Joachim Kemmer den Gesangspart, in der zweiten von 1998 Ron Williams.

Wright. The track won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1989,[3] the first for a Disney film since "Chim Chim Cher-ee" from Mary Poppins in 1964.[4] Additionally, the song won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media in 1991.[5]
