Il singolo fa parte del disco Call Me by Your Name: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, colonna sonora del film Chiamami col tuo nome del 2017.

La canzone è stata nominata per l'Oscar alla migliore canzone ai Premi Oscar 2018,[4] dove è stata cantata sul palco da Sufjan Stevens, presentato da Daniela Vega.[5]


Concezione e sviluppo


Luca Guadagnino, regista del film, chiese al cantante di essere la voce narrante della pellicola attraverso la sua musica: Stevens declinò l'offerta e concepì la canzone basandosi sul romanzo e dopo aver parlato col regista.[6]

Per Sufjan Stevens è la prima partecipazione ad una colonna sonora di un film.[7]

La canzone è composta in chiave di Sol maggiore,[8] ed è suonata da strumenti a corde (banjo e chitarra) insieme ad un pianoforte. Guadagnino considerava la sua voce cristallina e simile a quella di un angelo.[9]


Accoglienza


Hannah Fleming, scrivendo per la rivista Paste, ha commentato che il brano "afferma Stevens come una sorta di sonettista shakespeariano moderno"[10] mentre lo staff di Vanity Fair l'ha definita una canzone "profonda".[11]

David Bauder di Albany Times Union ha definito la canzone "una ballad magnifica ed eterea".[12]


Video musicale


Il video musicale è composto da immagini del film e alcune sequenze girate al Museo archeologico nazionale di Napoli,[13] ed è stato caricato sul canale YouTube di Pitchfork.[14]

Mystery of Love ist ein von Sufjan Stevens für Luca Guadagninos Film Call Me by Your Name geschriebenes und gespieltes Lied. Im Rahmen der Oscarverleihung 2018 wurde Mystery of Love als bester Song nominiert.

"Mystery of Love" is a song written and performed by American singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens and produced by Thomas Bartlett. It was self-released digitally, under license to Madison Gate Records and Sony Classical, on 1 December 2017. Luca Guadagnino, director of the 2017 film Call Me by Your Name, approached the singer to contribute to the film as a narrator, but Stevens declined and agreed to record an original song instead. Stevens was granted full creative control during the songwriting process and received inspiration from the film's script and André Aciman's novel of the same name. An acoustic song, the lyrics describe romance and allude to the relationship between film characters Elio and Oliver. They also make several references to the state of Oregon, birds, and Christianity.
