Al pari del precedente Boy, il disco è stato interamente prodotto da Steve Lillywhite ed è tra i più cupi ed introspettivi di tutta la carriera del gruppo. È proprio durante la realizzazione di quest'album infatti che gli U2 hanno attraversato la loro più grossa crisi: sia Bono che The Edge erano membri in quel periodo della setta religiosa "Shalom", cosa che rischiò di fare sciogliere la band. Bono in particolare entrò in una profonda crisi mistica, e proprio a ciò è dovuto il carattere estremamente religioso dei testi, in particolare nei brani Gloria, il cui ritornello non è altro che una preghiera in latino (Gloria in te domine/gloria exultate), I Threw a Brick Through a Window e With a Shout. Il brano Tomorrow descrive invece il giorno del funerale della madre di Bono (all'epoca il cantante aveva solo 14 anni).

Nell'album figura anche il contributo di Pod, ovvero Anthony Murphy, batterista della formazione originale dei Virgin Prunes.


Promozione


October è stato promosso dai singoli Fire e Gloria, usciti tra luglio e ottobre 1981, oltre che dalla tournée October Tour, partito dallo Slane Castle di Meath il 16 agosto 1981, e conclusosi al Civic Center di San Francisco il 30 marzo 1982.

Il disco ha ottenuto un successo inferiore rispetto al precedente e ai successivi, ed è ad oggi uno dei meno conosciuti del gruppo. I brani presenti in quest'album hanno inoltre trovato poco spazio nelle varie raccolte, fatta eccezione per The Best of 1980-1990, in cui compare come quindicesima traccia il brano October, tuttavia come traccia fantasma.

Le prime cinque tracce sono state registrate all'Hammersmith Palais il 5 dicembre 1982. Le altre tracce live sono state riprese dal Paradise theater di Boston il 6 marzo 1981, ad eccezione di I will follow, registrata ad Hattem, Paesi Bassi, il 14 maggio 1982.[8]

October ist das zweite Musikalbum der irischen Rockband U2, das zwischen Juli und August 1981 in den Windmill Lane Studios in Dublin aufgenommen wurde. Produziert wurde das Album von Steve Lillywhite. Toningenieur war Paul Thomas, dem Kevin Maloney assistierte. October wurde am 12. Oktober 1981 veröffentlicht.

October is the second studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was released on 12 October 1981 by Island Records, and was produced by Steve Lillywhite. The album was lyrically inspired by the memberships of Bono, the Edge, and Larry Mullen Jr. in a Christian group called the Shalom Fellowship, and consequently it contains spiritual and religious themes. Their involvement with Shalom Fellowship led them to question the relationship between the Christian faith and the "rock and roll" lifestyle, and threatened to break up the band.[1]
