Storia
Il progetto The Glove fu fondato nel 1983 come diversivo per Smith e Severin. Smith era sull'orlo di una crisi di nervi dopo la produzione di Pornography e l'estenuante tour conclusosi con l'uscita dal gruppo del bassista Simon Gallup.
Il nome della band si riferisce al Glove presente in Yellow Submarine dei Beatles (1968), e il titolo dell'album si riferisce al semisconosciuto film horror, nel quale gente che prende la droga chiamata Blue Sunshine diventa assassina dopo dieci anni dall'assunzione.
Smith e Severin registrarono solamente un album, Blue Sunshine del 1983, dal quale furono pubblicati due singoli, prima di tornare a lavorare a tempo pieno con le rispettive band. A causa dei vincoli contrattuali che proibivano a Smith di cantare attivamente con una band diversa dai The Cure, il ruolo di voce solista fu affidato alla ballerina Jeanette Landray, che ammetterà in futuro che all'epoca non sapeva cantare.[senza fonte]
Un'edizione rimasterizzata è stata pubblicata nell'agosto 2006, insieme a tre album rimasterizzati dei Cure, e include un cd con una versione alternativa dell'intero album con Robert Smith come voce per tutti i pezzi e inediti di studio.
L'esperienza dei The Glove per quanto marginale rappresenta un punto di svolta fondamentale per la carriera artistica di Robert Smith. La realizzazione del disco Pornography aveva portato i Cure sull'orlo del baratro. Pornography è caratterizzato da una struttura musicale molto scarna: una base ritmica serrata ed ipnotica, tappeti di tastiere ed un cantato cupo e rabbioso. Le sonorità di Blue Sunshine sono al contrario allegramente melanconiche. In Blue Sunshine Robert Smith inizia ad esplorare un elettropop che troverà la sua migliore espressione nel disco Japanese Whispers e nel singolo Let's Go to Bed. Sarà questo un filone musicale che porterà i Cure alla maturità artistica con album di enorme successo, come The Head on the Door, Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me e Disintegration.
