Biografia
Da adolescente impara a suonare la chitarra, il pianoforte e la batteria; inizia poi a comporre molto giovane canzoni per altri artisti, tra cui ricordiamo quelle di maggior successo: Hello Mary Lou per Ricky Nelson, Rubber Ball per Bobby Vee e He's a Rebel per le Crystals[1].
Compone anche alcune colonne sonore; debutta poi come cantante nel 1960, ottenendo l'anno successivo un grandissimo successo con Town Without Pity, scritta da Dimitri Tiomkin, inserita nella colonna sonora dell'omonimo film, che rimane la sua canzone più nota.
Nel 1962 un altro suo successo è Hello, Mary Lou, che in Italia verrà incisa due anni dopo da Adriano Celentano come lato B del 45 giri Una notte vicino al mare/Hello Mary Lou[2].
Sempre in Italia, dopo alcuni 45 giri pubblicati anche in italiano, diviene famoso nel 1964 partecipando al Festival di Sanremo con Quando vedrai la mia ragazza (in coppia con Little Tony) e E se domani (la nota canzone scritta da Giorgio Calabrese per il testo e da Carlo Alberto Rossi per la musica, che verrà anche incisa da Mina e che Pitney porta al festival in coppia con Fausto Cigliano).
Partecipa al festival per quattro anni di seguito, dal 1964 al 1967[3].
Tra le altre sue canzoni si ricordano: Un soldino, Amici miei, I tuoi anni più belli (che cantò a Sanremo in coppia con Iva Zanicchi), Nessuno mi può giudicare (che cantò a Sanremo in coppia con Caterina Caselli) e La rivoluzione (che cantò in coppia con Gianni Pettenati e che Luigi Tenco citò nel suo biglietto d'addio).
Gene Pitney in quegli anni frequenta spesso l'Italia e si innamora del paese, tanto che nel 1967 sposa sua moglie Lynn a Ospedaletti, a pochi chilometri da Sanremo[3][4].
Negli anni successivi è ritornato alcune volte in Italia per partecipare a spettacoli televisivi o a serate, ma la sua carriera è proseguita negli Stati Uniti.
Muore per infarto in albergo a Cardiff, dove la sera precedente si era esibito in concerto[5][6].
