Chicherina expressed support for the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic in the war involving those regions and Ukraine’s national government, and performed there numerous times to express her support.[3][4][5][6][7] This led to her being banned to perform in the FIFA ”fan zone” in Rostov-on-Don during the 2018 World Cup.[8] In March 2022 she was filmed taking down the Ukrainian flag in city of Enerhodar.
