Geschichte

Im Alter von 17 Jahren schrieb Mick Hucknall die Rohfassung des Liedes. Im Text verarbeitete Hucknall seine Vergangenheit, in der seine Mutter ihn und seinen Vater verließ, als er drei Jahre alt war, sowie seine Schulzeit.
„Born an only child in Denton, Manchester, Hucknall was raised by his father, Reg, a barber in Stockport, after his mother, Maureen, left home when he was three. The upheaval caused by his mother’s departure was the inspiration for his poignant hit Holding Back The Years.“ Hugh Davies.[2]

1982 bearbeitete er mit Neil Moss die Ballade und nahm den Titel mit seiner Band Frantic Elevators auf.[3]

1984 nahm Hucknall mit seiner Band Simply Red Holding Back the Years für das Album Picture Book auf und verbuchte damit 1985/1986 einen großen Erfolg. Die Veröffentlichung fand am 4. November 1985 statt.

In der Episode Lady Love von Miami Vice ist der Song zu hören.

Dem 1985 beim Label Elektra Records veröffentlichten Titel folgte im folgenden Jahr eine erfolgreichere Version von WEA Records.

Musikvideo

Das Musikvideo wurde in der britischen Küstenstadt Whitby gedreht. In der Handlung des Videos durchlebt Mick Hucknall seine Kindheit und auch seine Jugend, dabei werden auch Zwischenszenen eingeblendet.[4]

Coverversionen

Das Lied wurde von mehreren anderen Interpreten gecovert. Teile davon fanden als Samples Verwendung in anderen Stücken.[5]

"Holding Back the Years" is a song by British soul and pop band Simply Red, released as the third single from their debut studio album, Picture Book (1985). It remains their most successful single, having reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 and number two on the UK Singles Chart. It is one of two Simply Red songs (the other being their cover of "If You Don't Know Me by Now") to reach number one in the US. It also reached number four on the Adult Contemporary chart. "Holding Back the Years" had initially been released in the UK the year before, reaching number 51. The song was nominated in the category of Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 29th Annual Grammy Awards.
