Sings the Ballads of the True West ist das 21. Studioalbum des US-amerikanischen Country-Sängers Johnny Cash. Es erschien 1965 bei Columbia Records als Doppelalbum und wurde von Don Law und Frank Jones produziert.

Es handelt sich um ein Konzeptalbum, auf dem Cash sich mit dem Mythos des Wilden Westens beschäftigt.

Inhalt

Die Songs aus dem Album handeln vom wilden Westen und zeigen das Leben der Cowboys in dieser Zeit. Neben neuen Stücken von ihm selbst sowie von Carl Perkins, Maybelle Carter und Shel Silverstein nahm Cash auch einige amerikanische Traditionals wie Sweet Betsy from Pike, Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie, Sam Hall und Streets of Laredo auf.

Zwei der Songs haben historische Hintergründe: Hardin Wouldn't Run handelte vom berühmten Revolverhelden John Wesley Hardin, der bereits in einer Erzählung auf Cashs Album Ride This Train auftrat. Der Song Mister Garfield handelt vom Attentat auf den ehemaligen US-Präsidenten James A. Garfield am 2. Juli 1881.

Spätere Neuaufnahmen einzelner Songs

Sechs der Songs wurden von Cash später neu aufgenommen, wobei das alte Traditional I Ride an Old Paint unter dem Titel Slow Rider bereits auf Ride This Train fünf Jahre zuvor aufgenommen worden war.

Das von Silverstein geschriebene 25 Minutes to Go erzählt von einem Häftling, der die Minuten zu seiner Hinrichtung herunterzählt. Eine Neuaufnahme des Stücks wurde 1968 auf dem Album At Folsom Prison veröffentlicht, für das Cash vor inhaftiertem Publikum aufgetreten war.

Johnny Cash Sings the Ballads of the True West is a concept double album and the 22nd overall album released by country singer Johnny Cash, released on Columbia Records in 1965 (see 1965 in music). Covering twenty individual songs, the album, as its title suggests, contains various ballads and other songs on topics related to the history of the American Old West. This includes Carl Perkins' "The Ballad of Boot Hill", "Streets of Laredo", and the sole single from the album, "Mr. Garfield", describing the shock of the population after the assassination of President James Garfield. One of the songs, "25 Minutes to Go", would later be performed at Folsom Prison and appear on Cash's famous At Folsom Prison recording in 1968, while the melody of "Streets of Laredo" would be recycled for the song "The Walls of a Prison" featured on Cash's album From Sea to Shining Sea.
