Torches ist das Debütalbum der US-amerikanischen Band Foster the People. Es erreichte Platz 8 der Billboard 200.[2]

Zur Entstehung

Alle Stücke auf dem Album wurden von Mark Foster geschrieben. Nur bei Life on the Nickel wirkte zusätzlich Produzent Paul Epworth, bei Miss You Zach Heiligman mit. Noch vor der Veröffentlichung des Albums erschien die erste Single Pumped Up Kicks.

Rezeption

Das Album erreichte bei Metacritic.com 69 von 100 möglichen Punkten aus 20 Kritiken.[3] Allmusic gab ihm drei von fünf Sternen und beschrieb es als „catchy, electro-lite dance-pop that fits nicely next to such contemporaries as MGMT and Phoenix“.[4] Das Magazin Rolling Stone vergab 3,5 von fünf Sternen und schrieb: „their debut is genre-juggling, bedroom-dance-floor magic cut with moody-boy lyrics“.[5] Das Album war 2012 für den Grammy in der Kategorie Best Alternative Music Album nominiert. Pumped Up Kicks war für den „Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance“ nominiert.[6]

Torches is the debut studio album by American band Foster the People, released on May 23, 2011, by Startime International and Columbia Records. In 2010, the group parlayed the popularity of frontman Mark Foster's song "Pumped Up Kicks" into a record deal with Startime International, and wrote the album to back the song's popularity. "Pumped Up Kicks" proved to be a sleeper hit; after receiving significant airplay on modern rock stations, the song crossed-over onto contemporary hit radio and became one of 2011's most popular songs. Four additional singles were released from the album: "Helena Beat", "Call It What You Want", "Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)", and "Houdini", which had previously been released as a promotional single in the United Kingdom prior to the album's release.[6][7][8]
