The song was recorded by Simons and producer Tearce "Kizzo" Keaz in August 2008. In April 2009 the electropop track "Silly Boy" was leaked onto YouTube.[1] Simons said in an interview that at the time of the leak she was devastated, but later became thankful for its helping the track gain exposure.[2] However, in an earlier interview she said, "At first I was happy because it was cool to hear my song on the internet," but then she considered the difficulties of getting credit for it.[3]
In a press release, EMI's Billy Mann said: "Eva has taken the internet by storm and she already has a huge fan base that's just waiting for more. 'Silly Boy' captures her fabulous energy and strength of personality."[1]
"Silly Boy" was also originally reported to be a demo for R&B star Rihanna[4] and to feature songstress Lady Gaga,[1] after it was posted on Kanye West's blog.[4]
Nick Levine of media website Digital Spy gave the single a positive review and 5/5 stars stating: "Thankfully, the track itself is worth every little scrap of fuss. With its zapping synths, rock guitars, booming beats, spiky lyrics and planet-sized chorus, it's a whopper of a song - pop on steroids. As for Simons, her ballsy attitude matches the bombastic production and the hairdo she rocks in the video makes Elly Jackson look like a chicken with the styling wax. The result? The most striking pop debut since 'Just Dance'."[5]
Paul Lester of The Guardian stated that he thought the song was not up to much, but the producer deserves a medal, and also compared the song to Lady Gaga's single "Poker Face".[6]
"Silly Boy" is being released as a single. "Silly Boy" will be released to a total of twenty EMI territories through EMI Music Germany, beginning on September 4, 2009, in Germany[1] and on October 12, 2009, in the United Kingdom through Virgin Records. The song is now available on iTunes[7] in Australia,[8] North America, and Europe.[9]
The music video, directed by Micky Suelzer and Daniel Warwick, premiered on July 30, 2009, on both Simons' website and YouTube. The video shows Simons styling a large hairdo and a wearing a silver sparkly outfit during dance scenes, an outfit covered with plastic straws and a black jumpsuit during car scenes. Throughout the video, Simons is shown dancing with a team of backup dancers on the chorus of the song, and in a corridor singing with letters spelling her name in the verses. Also, Simons is shown in a car, which she later gets out of, slams the door of, and gets back into. The video features a very Disturbia-esque dance routine and Eva wears disco ball-themed clothing.
