The album debuted and peaked at number two on the ARIA Albums Chart, and spawned six singles. The album was voted Triple J's number one album of 2020,[8] and five of its songs were voted into the Triple J Hottest 100 countdowns of both 2019 and 2020 ("Good for You" at number 80 in 2019; "Booster Seat" at number 2, "Skin" at number 15, "Straightfaced" at number 28, and "Weightless" at number 81, all in 2020).
At the AIR Awards of 2021, the album was nominated for Independent Album of the Year and Best Independent Rock Album or EP.[9]
The album was certified gold in Australia in 2022.[10]
Release
"Good Grief" was released as the album's lead single on 24 April 2019, followed by "Good for You" and "Head Cold" on 15 August and 12 November respectively. Music videos for all three tracks were released on the band's YouTube channel.
On 20 December 2019, Spacey Jane signed with English record label AWAL, following a "breakout year" for the band; having become the fifth most played artist on Triple J Unearthed in 2019 and selling out three Australian tours.[11]
Three more singles were released in 2020. On 26 February 2020, the band officially announced the album's release via social media, alongside fourth single "Skin", a music video, and an Australia-wide tour.[12] Of the announcement, lead vocalist Caleb Harper said the band was "so incredibly excited to finally be putting out our first ever album - it's been a long time in the making and we can barely keep still over it".[13]
Penultimate single "Straightfaced" was released on 1 May 2020 alongside a music video,[14] followed by "Booster Seat" on 7 June 2020, premiering on Richard Kingsmill's program on Triple J.[15][16]
Following the album's release, the band held an online Zoom party with customers of the album on 19 June 2020.[17]

Sunlight received "widespread acclaim".[20]
Reviewing the album for NME, Ali Shutler concluded that "As huge as Spacey Jane sound on Sunlight, it's never at the expense of their heartfelt honesty. All the jagged edges of conflicting genres are somehow smoothed out under their command and there’s not a moment of their ambitious vision that feels uncomfortable."[19]
Declan Byrne of Triple J summarised the album as "navigat[ing] past relationships, failures and lessons learned, but all through a bright, summery filter".[8]
