Background
The Lead was supported by two singles. "Cardboard Box" was their debut single and acted as the lead single of the EP;[2] the song was produced by MNEK.[3][4] The single went viral through the social media platforms Twitter and TikTok.[5] The single was released on 24 March 2022, with the music video being released on 1 April 2022.[6][7] Many artists, such as SZA and Missy Elliott posted praise for the song.[8] The trio described the song as "getting yourself together after a breakup".[9] On 6 May 2022, an acoustic version of this single was released.[10]
The second single, "Immature", was released on 6 July 2022, the same day as the announcement of their debut EP.[11][12][13] Pitchfork described the trio's vocals as "an icy edge, while the trio's golden harmonies at the bridge keep things crisp".[14] A music video for this single was released on the same day as the EP.[15] The trio performed both singles live for Vevo DSCVR on 5 August 2022.[16]
In September 2022, the trio re-released the EP with an additional track, "Not My Job", which was released as a single.[17]
Critical reception
The EP received generally favorable reviews from critics. Complex called it "an essential listen".[18] Hype Magazine noted that the EP represents a revival of girl group sounds in the British R&B scene, which have not been heard for many years,[19] with Nylon making a similar assessment.[20] Rolling Stone predicted that the EP would vault FLO to stardom.[21] MuuMuse noted that the EP displays the confidence and authority of a long-establish star act, despite being FLO's first full release.[22] The EP also received positive reviews from The Honey Pop,[23] 360,[24] and Soul Bounce.[25]
