Antes de la grabación de este disco se integró al grupo el violinista Robby Steinhardt y con ello fueron cuatro de los seis miembros originales de la banda —Walsh, Steinhardt, Williams y Ehart— los que participaron en este álbum.[2]

Fue grabado en los Estudios Abbey Road, en Londres, Reino Unido de 1997 a 1998.[3] Always Never the Same contiene varias versiones de la banda que se encuentran en álbumes anteriores, además de nuevo material que contó con la colaboración de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Londres.[2]

La canción «Eleanor Rigby» es originalmente de la banda británica de rock The Beatles y se encuentra en el álbum Revolver de 1966.[4] Fue compuesta por John Lennon y Paul McCartney.[4]

Always Never the Same is the thirteenth studio album by American rock band Kansas, released in 1998. This album consists of mostly covers of the band’s previous work, re-recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra. New songs include "In Your Eyes", "The Sky Is Falling", "Need to Know" and the instrumental "Preamble". "Prelude & Introduction" is a medley of the Kansas songs "Carry On Wayward Son", "Point of Know Return", "Opus Insert", and "Lamplight Symphony". The album also includes a cover of The Beatles’ "Eleanor Rigby". "Carry On Wayward Son" was also recorded during this time, in case strong sales would bring forth a second symphonic album, but was never released.
