En septiembre de 2009, American Idiot comenzó su recorrido en el teatro Berkeley Repertory Theatre de California,[1] y después de dos prórrogas, se trasladó al Teatro St. James en Broadway.

El primer sencillo del álbum, 21 Guns fue lanzado el 3 de diciembre de 2009. En el álbum también se incluye la canción When It's Time, una canción inédita escrita por Billie Joe Armstrong. Dos versiones de la misma aparecen en el álbum, una realizada por el musical de Brodway y una de Green Day. El álbum fue lanzado originalmente en el sitio web mtv.com el 13 de abril de 2010 y fue lanzado en CD el 20 de abril de 2010. Una versión en vinilo del álbum fue lanzada el 13 de julio de 2010.

El álbum debutó en el # 43 en el Billboard 200, convirtiéndose en una de las bandas sonoras musicales más gráficas, y ha vendido más de 40.000 ejemplares a partir de agosto de 2010.[2]

Las canciones se dividen en dos discos, aunque en la portada no hay mención de esto y las canciones aparecen listadas desde la 1 a la 22. Adicionalmente, la canción Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) no aparece en el álbum, aunque la misma es usada para el cierre de la obra de teatro.

Contenido

El musical del álbum de American Idiot ha marcado un récord de taquilla en Broadway, donde subió al escenario el 21 de abril de 2010, y de acuerdo con el Wall Street Journal, el musical ganó sólo en la primera semana $ 777.860 dólares.

Los productores del espectáculo han señalado también que la cantidad de dinero podría haber sido aún mayor, debido a que muchos boletos fueron regalados como parte de promociones. Hasta la fecha, todos los espectáculos presentados en Brodway se han agotado.

En las primeras presentaciones del musical sorprendentemente Billie Joe Armstrong ha tocado en el teatro la canción Basket Case, el primer gran éxito de la banda incluido en el álbum Dookie, en 1994 y el tercero publicado por el grupo.

American Idiot: The Original Broadway Cast Recording is an album by the cast of American Idiot and Green Day. In September 2009, American Idiot began its run in the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, California.[1] After two extensions, it was transferred to the St. James Theatre on Broadway. The first single from the album, "21 Guns" was released on December 3, 2009. The album also includes "When It's Time", a previously unreleased song written by Billie Joe Armstrong. Two versions of it appear on the album, one by The Cast and one by Green Day. It was originally released on mtv.com on April 13, 2010 and was released on CD on April 20, 2010. A vinyl version of the album was released on July 13, 2010. The album debuted at number 43 on the Billboard 200, becoming one of the highest-charting musical soundtracks. The album won Best Musical Show Album at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards. Shortly after the album's release, another album featuring 13 songs from the album was released as American Idiot: Selections from the Original Broadway Cast Recording.
