Siguiendo su "teoría de la oscuridad", el disco salió cuando el grupo ya se había olvidado de haberlo grabado. En 2011 se lanzó la versión extendida, con siete minutos extra de música.

Curiosamente las primeras versiones en CD incluían bonus tracks que no tenían nada que ver con Not Available. Estas seis canciones aparecieron originalmente en Title In Limbo (1983), y fueron eliminadas en reediciones posteriores.

Not Available is the second studio album (released as the fourth) by the Residents, recorded in 1974. The album was allegedly meant to only be released once its creators completely forgot about its existence (adhering to their "Theory of Obscurity," in which an artist's purest work is created without an audience) - however, due to ongoing delays in the release of Eskimo, Not Available was released to supply the demand for new Residents material, given their unexpected critical and commercial success following the release of the Duck Stab EP.
