«Start!» fue publicada el 11 de agosto de 1980 en el Reino Unido por Polydor Records (como 2059 266) como el sencillo principal del álbum Sound Affects con «Liza Radley» como lado B.[5] El sencillo rápidamente se convirtió en un éxito comercial, alcanzando el puesto #1 en el UK Singles Chart[3] y el puesto #75 en el Billboard Dance Club Songs de los Estados Unidos.[6]

"Start!" is the eleventh UK single release by the band The Jam and their second number-one, following "Going Underground"/"Dreams of Children".[2] Upon its release on 15 August 1980, it debuted at number three, and two weeks later reached number one for one week.[3] Written by Paul Weller and produced by Vic Coppersmith-Heaven and The Jam, "Start!" was the lead single from the band's fifth album Sound Affects. The single's B-side is "Liza Radley".
