El álbum está influenciado en los años 80's. La carátula del álbum es la foto de una familia sentada alrededor de la televisión, mirando algo que se parece a The Day After, una película hecha en medio de los 80's acerca de las acocalípticas compras hechas durante la Guerra Fría. El primer sencillo del álbum, "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous", es una obvia referencia al show del mismo nombre, de los años 80's. La séptima pista del álbum, "My Bloody Valentine", hace referencia al film del año 1981, My Bloody Valentine, o a la banda formada en el año 1984, del mismo nombre. El décimo track del álbum, "Say Anything", refiere al film romántico del año 1989, "Say Anything".

The Young and the Hopeless (englisch für „die Jungen und die Hoffnungslosen“) ist das zweite Studioalbum der US-amerikanischen Rockband Good Charlotte. Es wurde am 1. Oktober 2002 über die Labels Epic Records und Daylight Records veröffentlicht.

The Young and the Hopeless is the second studio album by American rock band Good Charlotte. Following the release of their self-titled debut album (2000), the band met producer Eric Valentine and engaged him for their next album. Sessions lasted from February to May 2002; Josh Freese of the Vandals served as a session drummer. Almost all of the songs on the album were written by Benji and Joel Madden but two tracks were co-written with Valentine and Goldfinger frontman John Feldmann. Drummer Chris Wilson joined the band, prior to the release of "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" in September.
