Enregistré à San Francisco en juin 1982, l'album a été produit par le guitariste du groupe East Bay Ray et le producteur de disques punk Thom Wilson. L'album est plus sombre et plus influencé par le punk hardcore que leur premier album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables car le groupe a essayé de développer le son et l'ambiance qu'il avait obtenu avec son single de 1980 Holiday in Cambodia[9]. C'était le premier album complet avec le batteur D.H. Peligro, et c'est l'album préféré des Dead Kennedys du chanteur Jello Biafra[10].

Selon Jello Biafra, les principales influences musicales de l'album étaient Bauhaus, Les Baxter et The Groundhogs[11]. La photo de la pochette est "Hands" par le photographe Michael Wells[12].

Plastic Surgery Disasters ist das zweite Album der US-amerikanischen Punkband Dead Kennedys. Es wurde später als Kombination mit der EP In God We Trust, Inc. wiederveröffentlicht. Die letzten acht Tracks sind die Titel der EP. Das Innencover der LP wurde von Winston Smith gestaltet. Wie bei den Dead Kennedys üblich wurde das Album in San Francisco aufgenommen. Die Band habe sich weiterentwickelt, sagten Kritiker und Fans angesichts der Veröffentlichung. Zudem fällt das Album noch punklastiger aus als der Vorgänger Fresh Fruits for Rotting Vegetables. Auf diesem Album wurde auch mit anderen Musikrichtungen als Punk experimentiert.

Plastic Surgery Disasters is the second full-length album released by punk rock band Dead Kennedys. Recorded in San Francisco during June 1982, it was produced by the band and punk record producer Thom Wilson, with Geza X getting a "special thanks" underneath the DK's/Wilson credit for additional production. (DK's guitarist East Bay Ray redundantly added his own name to the production credits on Manifesto reissues of the album.) The album is darker and more hardcore-influenced than their debut album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables as a result of the band trying to expand on the sound and mood they had achieved with their 1980 single "Holiday in Cambodia".[9] It was the first full-length album to feature drummer D.H. Peligro, and is frontman Jello Biafra's favorite Dead Kennedys album.[10]
