L'album contiene alcune delle migliori composizioni dei Beatles uscite nel periodo, come suggerisce il titolo, tra il 1962 e il 1966. Tra i singoli presenti in questa raccolta si possono citare: Love Me Do, She Loves You, A Hard Day's Night, Ticket to Ride, Yesterday, Help! e Michelle.

La foto di copertina è stata realizzata nello stesso posto – la sede londinese della EMI in Manchester Square – e nella stessa sessione dello scatto usato per il loro primo album Please Please Me.[3]

L'album arriva in prima posizione in Norvegia per 13 settimane ed in Austria per 6 settimane. Il primo posto è arrivato anche in Francia, Giappone e Spagna, il secondo nei Paesi Bassi e Germania Ovest, il terzo nella Billboard 200 e nella Official Albums Chart, il quarto in Canada e Svizzera, il quinto in Nuova Zelanda ed il nono in Australia.

1962–1966, also known as the Red Album, is a compilation album of hit songs by the English rock band the Beatles, spanning the years indicated in the title. Released with its counterpart 1967–1970 (the "Blue Album") in 1973, the double LP peaked at number 3 in the United Kingdom. In the United States, it topped the Cash Box albums chart and peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Top LPs & Tape chart while 1967–1970 reached the top spot. The album was re-released in September 1993 on compact disc, charting at number 3 in the UK.
