L'album

Considerato un concept album sulla Daisy Age, (sigla di Da Inner Sound Y'All), ovvero una dimensione immaginaria ispirata alla filosofia ed all'iconografia hippie,[1][2] 3 Feet High and Rising si distingue dalle altre pubblicazioni hip hop uscite in precedenza per le sue sonorità molto meno aggressive e l'eclettismo stilistico dei brani.[3][4] Le influenze dell'album spaziano fra hip hop, funk, jazz, reggae, soul, e psichedelia,[3][5] mentre i testi delle sue canzoni trattano argomentazioni relative alla pace, all'amore, ed al rispetto delle donne.[3] I numerosi campionamenti presenti nel disco sono tratti da lezioni di lingua francese, spot pubblicitari,[6] e brani realizzati da altri musicisti (inclusi Steely Dan, Johnny Cash, Turtles, Parliament e Otis Redding). [2][6] Una delle tracce più note dell'album, The Magic Number, cita Three Is A Magic Number di Bob Dorough, mentre Buddy vede la partecipazione dei Jungle Brothers e A Tribe Called Quest.[1]

Critica

3 Feet High and Rising ricevette giudizi molto positivi da parte della critica.[5] Robert Christgau diede all'album una valutazione pari ad A−[7] mentre AllMusic lo definì «il debutto più convincente e giocoso della storia dell'hip-hop».[8] L'album è stato inserito in un libro dedicato ai «500 dischi fondamentali della storia del rock» dove venne definito «irresistibile» nonché «...un debutto che il trascorrere del tempo non ha minimamente offeso.»[6] In seguito all'uscita di 3 Feet High and Rising, i De La Soul vennero inoltre considerati «il futuro dell'hip-hop».[3]

3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by American hip hop group De La Soul, released on March 3, 1989[1] by Tommy Boy Records. It is the first of three collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. The album title comes from the Johnny Cash song "Five Feet High and Rising".[2] The album contains the singles "Me Myself and I", "The Magic Number", "Buddy", and "Eye Know".
