L'album ripercorre tutta la saga degli Iron Maiden partendo dall'inedito Virus, pubblicato come singolo, fino al The Soundhouse Tapes, prima incisione della band, passando anche da alcune versioni dal vivo tratte dal Live After Death.

Best of the Beast è stato pubblicato in tre formati differenti: disco singolo da 16 tracce, doppio CD da 27 tracce e vinile da 34 tracce.

Best of the Beast was Iron Maiden's first "best of" album,[4] released in 1996 in three formats: a 34 track (four disc) vinyl, a 27 track (two disc) CD, a 16 track (single disc) CD and MiniDisc. The vinyl edition is, to date, the band's longest record release, running for over three hours.
