Il disco è principalmente ricordato per la "ballad rap" I Need Love. Con oltre due milioni di copie vendute nel mercato statunitense, è il più grande successo commerciale di LL Cool J. Nel 1998, la rivista specializzata The Source inserisce l'album tra i migliori cento del genere hip hop.[5]

L'album ottiene recensioni miste e generalmente i critici sono concordi nell'affermare che non ha eguagliato l'album d'esordio.[1] Jason Birchmeier per Allmusic scrive che l'album è «leggermente deludente» poiché, pur essendo «solido, manca di una scintilla creativa che ha reso Radio un prodotto così rinvigorente solo un paio di anni prima»,[1] dichiarando che l'assenza di Rick Rubin qui pesa.[1] Inoltre, secondo Birchmeier, «negli anni trascorsi da quando il rapper aveva pubblicato Radio, la musica rap aveva fatto passi da gigante, a differenza di LL»[1] e all'epoca dell'uscita di BAD aveva dovuto confrontarsi con artisti come Eric B. & Rakim, Kool Moe Dee, Public Enemy e Boogie Down Productions, mentre EPMD, Ice-T, N.W.A. e Big Daddy Kane erano all'orizzonte.»[1]

Bigger and Deffer (abbreviated as BAD on the album cover) is the second studio album by American rapper LL Cool J, released on May 29, 1987 by Def Jam Recordings and Columbia Records. It features the hit single “I’m Bad”, and the first commercially successful "rap ballad", "I Need Love". It also contains the track "Go Cut Creator Go", which paid homage to his DJ. Other tracks like “Kanday”, “The Do Wop”, “My Rhyme Ain’t Done”, “The Breakthrough”, and “The Bristol Hotel” were also popular with fans, and helped make the album a hip-hop classic. With over two million copies sold in the United States alone,[1] it stands as one of LL Cool J's biggest career albums. Bigger And Deffer dominated the summer of 1987, spending 11 weeks at number one on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart while also reaching number 3 on the Billboard 200 pop albums chart.
