Il disco

L'album ha ottenuto all'uscita un notevole successo commerciale, raggiungendo il 2º posto nella classifica di Billboard[10], dove è rimasto per 7 settimane dietro a The Wall dei Pink Floyd. È considerato tra i più significativi lavori di Tom Petty. Nel 2003, il disco si classificò alla posizione numero 313 su Rolling Stone nella lista dei 500 migliori album di tutti i tempi.[11]

Il titolo è una citazione dell'ammiraglio statunitense della guerra di secessione David Farragut:

Damn the Torpedoes is the third studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, released on October 19, 1979. This was the first of three Petty albums originally released by the Backstreet Records label, distributed by MCA Records. It built on the commercial success and critical acclaim of his two previous albums and reached #2 on the Billboard album chart.[1] The album went on to become certified Triple Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
