Descrizione

Primo album registrato con il chitarrista Per Eriksson e il bassista Niklas Sandin, subentrati ai fratelli Fredrik e Mattias Norrman al termine del 2009,[4] Dead Ends Kings si caratterizza per una maggiore direzione verso sonorità progressive metal,[1][2][5] con diversi brani che presentano le tipiche strutture del genere. Tuttavia viene concesso anche un largo spazio alla melodia e a sezioni più soft, tra cui la seconda traccia The One You Are Looking for Is Not Here, che ha visto la partecipazione vocale di Silje Wergeland dei The Gathering.[6]

Proprio riguardo all'aspetto musicale il chitarrista Anders Nyström ha evidenziato come il disco esplori nuovi generi musicali pur mantenendo le sonorità tipiche del gruppo:[7]

«Abbiamo percorso la linea sottile tra il tentativo di non ripeterci ma anche di non allontanarci da ciò che la gente conosce e ama. Ora siamo pronti a consegnare le prove e qualunque sia la direzione che questo disco ha preso è ora che lo decidiate voi. Siamo fiduciosi che la creatività e la passione in questo album siano qualcosa che echeggerà anche oltre il vicolo cieco.»

Dal punto di vista dei testi e del tema principale che ricorrono tra gli undici brani dell'album, il cantante Jonas Renkse ha spiegato che essi riguardano i corridoi della nostra mente da cui non c'è alcuna via di ritorno.[7]

Dead End Kings is Katatonia's ninth full-length album. It was released on 27 August 2012 in Europe and 28 August in the United States through Peaceville Records. Like all Katatonia releases, the album was written primarily by founding members Jonas Renkse and Anders Nyström. The band went through a number of lineup changes, making the album the first to feature bassist Niklas Sandin, the only album to feature second guitarist Per Eriksson, and the last to feature drummer Daniel Liljekvist.
