L'album rappresenta la prima pubblicazione del gruppo attraverso la sussidiaria della Sony Music, concludendo il contratto decennale con la Roadrunner Records,[9] nonché il primo dai tempi di Images and Words ad avere una durata complessiva inferiore a un'ora.

Registrazione

Contrariamente a quanto operato in passato, per la prima volta in carriera tutti i membri dei Dream Theater si sono riuniti in un unico luogo di registrazione (un fienile situato a New York denominato Yonderbarn)[10] per le fasi di scrittura e registrazione del materiale anziché registrare le proprie parti in studi separati.[11]

Già dalla fase di composizione, l'intenzione del gruppo era quella di comporre un disco più immediato e differente rispetto al precedente The Astonishing, concept album interamente composto dal chitarrista John Petrucci e dal tastierista Jordan Rudess e che ha richiesto tre anni di lavorazione.[10] Il primo brano composto per il disco è stato At Wit's End,[12] mentre per tutte le tracce restanti sono stati necessari 18 giorni,[10] un breve processo simile a quanto svolto con Train of Thought del 2003, secondo quanto spiegato da Petrucci.[13] Tra i brani composti vi è anche Room 137, il primo scritto dal batterista Mike Mangini dal suo ingresso in formazione.[14]

Distance Over Time is the fourteenth studio album by American progressive metal band Dream Theater, released on February 22, 2019, and being the band's first release on Inside Out Music.[1][2] Distance over Time was announced alongside a tour of North America where Dream Theater would support the new album and celebrate the 20th anniversary of its fifth studio album, Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999).[3][4][5] On December 7, 2018, the lead single "Untethered Angel" and its music video were released.[6] The second single, "Fall into the Light", was released on January 11, 2019.[7] The third single, "Paralyzed", and its accompanying video were released on February 8, 2019.[8] It is the band's most successful album chart-wise to date, taking top 10 positions in 19 countries (including going to number one in Germany and Switzerland).
