Il brano, scritto dalla cantante stessa assieme a Tim Laws, e prodotto da Richie Fermie, ha raggiunto il numero uno in Inghilterra, dove è rimasto per tre settimane nel giugno 1993. Il singolo ha ottenuto ottimi risultati anche in USA, Australia, Irlanda, Svizzera, Francia e Italia.
Originariamente il singolo conteneva un campionamento di Fast Car di Tracy Chapman, ma per ragioni di copyright, vi si dovette rinunciare, ma il singolo divenne lo stesso un successo.
La canzone in seguito è stata a sua volta campionata dai More Fire Crew per il loro singolo del 2001 Dreams.
La canzone è entrata nella colonna sonora del film Magnolia di Paul ThHomas Anderson, dove il personaggio di Donnie Smith la cantava in continuazione per motivarsi.
Il titolo del primo greatest hits della cantante Dreams Can Come True, Greatest Hits Vol. 1 è basato proprio sul ritornello del brano.

"Dreams" is a song by British singer Gabrielle. It was written by Gabrielle and Tim Laws and produced by Richie Fermie for her debut studio album, Find Your Way (1993). Originally, the song included a sample of the song "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman,[3] but because of copyright reasons the sample had to be removed.[4] Released as Gabrielle's debut single, "Dreams" entered the UK Singles Chart at number two, which was the highest chart entry a debut act had scored in the United Kingdom at that time.[3] before reaching number one for three weeks in June 1993.
