Si tratta della prima registrazione con il nuovo batterista Reed St. Mark, che rimarrà nella band fino al 1988 registrando To Mega Therion e Into the Pandemonium. Fu pubblicato anche in un'edizione limitata a 500 copie in picture disc, mentre negli Stati Uniti uscì su Metal Blade/Enigma[2][3]. In Canada fu pubblicato da Banzai Records con l'omissione delle tracce 2 e 3 e con una copertina censurata[4]. Nel 1999 tutte le tracce dell'EP sono state incluse come bonus track nella ristampa di Morbid Tales nei loro mix originali[5].

Emperor's Return is the second release by the Swiss extreme metal band Celtic Frost. It was released in 1985 as an extended play and was their first record featuring American drummer Reid Cruickshank (a.k.a. "Reed St. Mark").[3] The band's bleak publicity photographs from this period had an influence on the fashion and style of the developing black metal genre.[2] The tracks of Emperor's Return were remastered and re-released in the 1999 edition of Morbid Tales and yet again remastered and included in the 2017 edition of To Mega Therion.[es] Emperor's Return
