Empire State of Mind è un inno alla città natale di Jay-Z e di Alicia Keys, New York, e utilizza un campionamento del brano Love on a Two-Way Street dei The Moments. Il brano è stato pubblicato lo stesso giorno di Doesn't Mean Anything,[13] primo singolo ad essere estratto da The Element of Freedom di Alicia Keys.

La canzone è stata presentata per la prima volta durante il concerto di beneficenza di Jay-Z Answer the Call, tenuto presso il Madison Square Garden l'11 settembre 2009. La canzone è stata inoltre interpretata live da Jay-Z e Alicia Keys il 13 settembre 2009 in occasione degli MTV Video Music Awards 2009.[14]

Il brano ha debuttato alla cinquantesima posizione della Billboard Hot 100, raggiungendo la quinta posizione della classifica la settimana successiva, e la vetta il 18 novembre 2009, mantenendola per cinque settimane consecutive,[15] diventando il primo singolo in vetta a quella classifica per Jay-Z. Per entrambi gli artisti, si tratta del quarto numero uno in America. Empire State of Mind ha raggiunto anche la seconda posizione della Official Singles Chart e della classifica irlandese.

Alicia Keys ha registrato un sequel del brano, intitolato Empire State of Mind, Pt. II (Broken Down), incluso nel suo quarto album The Element of Freedom. Empire State of Mind ist ein Lied des US-amerikanischen Rappers Jay-Z gemeinsam mit der Sängerin Alicia Keys. Es wurde erstmals am 20. Oktober 2009 veröffentlicht und erreichte in den Vereinigten Staaten und Tschechien Platz eins der Hitparaden. Es wurde als dritte Single aus Jay-Zs elftem Studioalbum The Blueprint 3 von seinem eigenen Label Roc Nation veröffentlicht. Das Lied wurde ursprünglich von den aus Brooklyn stammenden Songwritern Angela Hunte und Jane't „Jnay“ Sewell-Ulepic geschrieben.[1] Nachdem ein Mitarbeiter der EMI Music Publishing sie dazu überredet hatte, sendeten sie das Lied dann an Jay Z.

"Empire State of Mind" is a song performed by American rapper Jay-Z featuring American singer Alicia Keys from the former's 11th studio album, The Blueprint 3 (2009). It was released on October 20, 2009. Produced by Al Shux, the song features a music sample of "Love on a Two-Way Street" performed by The Moments. It was originally written by Angela Hunte and Janet Sewell-Ulepic as a tribute to their hometown, New York City. The following month, they submitted it to Jay-Z's label Roc Nation, whose reviews were a discouragement. They later took the suggestion of an associate of EMI Music Publishing and resubmitted it to Jay-Z, who kept the "New York" singing part on the hook, changed the verses, and recorded it. The song's title, similar to New York State of Mind, is a wordplay and tribute to New York's nickname (Empire State) and could also be a reference to Empire State Building in Manhattan, New York City.
