Exodus è un album del gruppo musicale reggae giamaicano Bob Marley and the Wailers, registrato a Londra nel 1977 per la casa discografica Island Records. Il cantante si era trasferito a Londra dopo essere scampato ad un tentato omicidio avvenuto il 5 dicembre 1976, mentre si trovava nella sua abitazione di Kingston, in Giamaica. Il titolo quindi ha un doppio significato in quanto si riferisce sia all'esodo del popolo eletto che alla sua posizione politica contro il Primo Ministro Michael Manley: allo slogan elettorale di quest'ultimo "We know where we are going", Marley rispose componendo Exodus. Nell'aggressione, anche la moglie rimase ferita da un colpo di arma da fuoco ed entrambi furono trasferiti in Gran Bretagna il giorno dopo. Altre tracce dell'album come So Much Thing to Say, The Heaten, Guiltiness e Jammin', hanno chiari riferimenti a quanto gli era accaduto.

Uscito il 3 giugno 1977, è considerato dai critici il miglior disco di Bob Marley, il profeta del reggae morto nel 1981, ed uno dei più rappresentativi dell'intero genere. Rimase nelle classifiche di vendita britanniche per 56 settimane, grazie anche al successo internazionale del singolo Jammin'. Nelle sue liriche, soprattutto nelle celebri canzoni Exodus, One Love e The Heathen (i pagani), il disco affronta complessi temi politici, razziali e religiosi.

Solo un mese dopo, nel luglio del 1977, gli verrà diagnosticato il melanoma che entro pochi anni lo porterà alla morte.


Riconoscimenti


La rivista Rolling Stone l'ha inserito al 169º posto della sua lista dei 500 migliori album. Nel 1999 la rivista TIME elegge Exodus migliore album del XX secolo.

Exodus ist eines der wichtigsten Reggae-Alben der jamaikanischen Reggaelegende Bob Marley und seiner Band sowie das fünfte Studioalbum für Island Records. Die Songs wurden im Januar und Februar 1977 in London aufgenommen, das Album erschien am 3. Juni 1977. Exodus entstand im Londoner Exil, weil sich Marley dort von dem Mordanschlag vom Dezember 1976 sowie der angespannten politischen Situation in seiner Heimat erholte.

Exodus is a 1977 album by Jamaican reggae band Bob Marley and the Wailers, first released in June 1977 through Island Records, following Rastaman Vibration (1976). The album's production has been characterized as laid-back with pulsating bass beats and an emphasis on piano, trumpet and guitar. Unlike previous albums from the band, Exodus thematically moves away from cryptic story-telling; instead it revolves around themes of change, religious politics, and sexuality. The album is split into two halves: the first half revolves around religious politics, while the second half is focused on themes of making love and keeping faith.
