Il disco


From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah fu il secondo album dei Nirvana ad essere pubblicato dopo la morte di Cobain e venne principalmente compilato dal bassista dei Nirvana Krist Novoselic, che si occupò anche di scrivere le note interne dell'album. Originariamente, Novoselic e Dave Grohl (batterista del gruppo) avevano pensato di far uscire il disco nel 1994 insieme a MTV Unplugged in New York come album doppio intitolato Verse Chorus Verse, che avrebbe contenuto le due "anime" dei Nirvana, quella acustica e quella più propriamente rock, ma dato lo sconcerto causato dall'inaspettata morte di Cobain, accantonarono il progetto.[9]

Il nome "Wishkah", cui fa riferimento il titolo dell'album, è in realtà un fiume dello Stato di Washington, USA, che passa attraverso i luoghi in cui Cobain ha trascorso parte della sua vita ed è dove è stato sparso un terzo delle sue ceneri in seguito alla cremazione del suo corpo.[10]

Dall'album non venne estratto nessun singolo, ma a scopo promozionale per le radio furono prodotti singoli con alcuni brani, inclusi Aneurysm (US & UK), Drain You (USA), Lithium (Paesi Bassi) e Smells Like Teen Spirit (Spagna e Francia). Inoltre, in Australia fu anche distribuito un cofanetto box set in edizione limitata contenente tre singoli promozionali con le canzoni Aneurysm, Heart-Shaped Box, e Polly.
