Il disco

All'annuncio della pubblicazione dell'album, Gerard Way ha detto[8][9]:

«Volevo fare piccole cose che suonassero grandi. La mia intenzione era di fare arte al 100% incompresa, utilizzando lo strumento attualmente meno "radio-friendly" di tutti, la chitarra. Sapevo che ci sarebbero stati tanti pedali fuzz. Sapevo che avrei suonato strumenti Fender. Sapevo che mi sarei ispirato ai miei eroi della chitarra alla scuola d'arte, Mary Timony e Carrie Brownstein [dei Black Flag], e che avrei tratto molta influenza dallo shoegaze e dal britpop. Volevo un disco che avesse un impatto galvanizzante sulle persone.»

In un'intervista ha inoltre aggiunto di voler "far rinascere il britpop in America"[10]:

«Ho tanti dischi britpop, tanti dischi shoegaze, ma in radio non sento più niente di tutto ciò. Quindi l'obiettivo principale è cambiare un po' le attuali tendenze musicali.»

Sempre nella stessa intervista ha raccontato l'idea del titolo Hesitant Alien, dicendo che davanti all'industria musicale si è sempre trovato esitante, e che sin dai tempi dei My Chemical Romance si è sempre sentito un alieno in un mondo tanto diverso dal loro stile[10].

Dal punto di vista dei testi, Way ha dichiarato di essersi ispirato ai "poeti del britpop" Jarvis Cocker e Damon Albarn e a Frank Black, e che le canzoni dell'album parlano principalmente di lotte, inizi e del trovare un qualcosa di nuovo nel mondano e nell'astratto[8].

Alla fine dell'anno è stato classificato al primo posto nella lista degli album essenziali del 2014 stilata da Alternative Press[11] ed è arrivato secondo nella classifica dei migliori album del 2014 secondo i lettori di Rock Sound[12].

Hesitant Alien is the debut studio album by Gerard Way, lead singer of the American rock band My Chemical Romance, released in the US on September 29, 2014 and on September 30 worldwide. It was officially announced in May 2014, although demos of the songs "Zero Zero" and "Millions" have circulated since 2012. The album was produced by Doug McKean, known for his work as recording engineer on a number of projects with producer Rob Cavallo, including several releases by My Chemical Romance. Hesitant Alien received mostly positive reviews, and was a moderate commercial success reaching No. 16 on the US Billboard 200 and some international charts. To support the album, Way assembled a touring band, "The Hormones".
