Mixtape crudo e incongruente[3][2] che mostra tutto il potenziale dell'artista proveniente da Harlem[2] e gli procura scomodi paragoni con leggende newyorkesi quali Nas, Jay-Z e Notorious BIG,[2] esce poco prima della firma di East con la Def Jam[1][2][3] ed è erroneamente considerato come l'album d'esordio del rapper.[3] Secondo HipHopDX, «l'approccio schietto di Dave East al rapping gli garantisce di proseguire [nel gioco] per anni e di decidere se fare un lavoro underground o commerciale»,[3] suggerendo che Kairi Chanel punta a fare breccia nelle classifiche.[3] Alcune delle performance degli ospiti sono apprezzate dalla critica specializzata.[1][2][3] It Was Written è un omaggio all'album omonimo di Nas.[1][2]
