Descrizione
L'album si allontana dal lento e melodico black metal di Aspera Hiems Symfonia e ha un suono oscuro, tenebroso, dato dall'utilizzo di sintetizzatori, che spesso fanno risaltare questi elementi sulla chitarra. La maggior parte delle canzoni ruotano attorno a temi teatrali, letterari e si interrogano sulla figura ingannevole di Satana. Il caratteristico scream del black metal è sostituito da una voce pulita con toni molto bassi, occasionalmente alternata con un cantato lirico da Garm alternato a quello dai toni acuti di ICS Vortex. La Masquerade Infernale è considerato da molti come il capolavoro degli Arcturus e uno dei più grande esempi di avantgarde metal. È stato ripubblicato nel 2002 dalla Candlelight Records, rimasterizzato e senza la traccia nascosta prima della traccia 1.

La Masquerade Infernale (Misspelled French for The Infernal Masquerade. The correct spelling would be La Mascarade Infernale.) is the second studio album by Arcturus. Released by Misanthropy Records in 1997, the album marks a drastic musical change from the slow, nature-influenced melodic black metal of Aspera Hiems Symfonia. Most of the songs revolve around the themes of theater, literature, and Satan. The screams characteristic of black metal utilized by Kristoffer Rygg on Aspera are replaced by a gruff, low-toned, clean vocal style.[4] The album also features operatic singing and bizarre high-pitched singing from guest vocalist Simen Hestnæs, who nine years later would replace Rygg as the band's frontman.
