Venne registrato durante il suo ricovero dopo l'agguato subito nel novembre 1994, mentre venne pubblicato quando si trovava in carcere per violenza sessuale. L'album, quando Tupac era ancora in prigione, balzò in Top numero 1 superando artisti come Bruce Springsteen e Eagles ed è considerato il miglior album della carriera del rapper. È l'album scritto in prigione con più vendite nella storia della musica. Come ha descritto lo studioso accademico Jeremy Prestholdt dell'università di Oxford:"Shakur con album come Me Against The World ha offerto critiche toccanti sulle disuguaglianze contemporanee e così è arrivato a incarnare la disillusione e l'alienazione sociale del dopo Guerra Fredda. Le fazioni militanti di molte guerre civili del mondo hanno abbracciato Shakur come una figura ispiratrice che rappresenta quegli attributi che i combattenti desideravano: potenziamento e capacità di superare grandi difficoltà. Hanno usato le magliette di Shakur come uniformi e hanno incorporato la sua musica nella loro retorica quotidiana."[27]
