Il disco


Il titolo dell'album viene rivelato il 17 settembre 2013 insieme a due immagini promozionali in bianco e nero[1]. Dal 23 settembre al 4 ottobre sul canale YouTube della casa discografica vengono pubblicati sette teaser video che rivelano in parte lo stile dell'album, che include brani jazz, swing e bossanova: il primo teaser è quello della canzone Between the Lips[2], al quale seguono Walk With Me, Girl[3], Everybody Has Secrets[4], Modern Times[5], Love of B[6], Wait[7] e la title track The Red Shoes[8]. Per l'album, IU compone Love of B, eseguita insieme al chitarrista jazz Bak Ju-won, Bad Day e la versione coreana di Voice Mail, la bonus track già apparsa in giapponese nell'EP Can You Hear Me?[9]. Del brano Wait, invece, scrive solo il testo, e duetta con Ga-in delle Brown Eyed Girls in Everybody Has Secrets, con il cantautore Choi Baek-ho in Walk With Me, Girl, con Jonghyun degli SHINee in A Gloomy Clock (da lui scritta e arrangiata)[10], e con la cantautrice Yang Hee-eun in Daydream[11].

L'album esce il 7 ottobre 2013 in concomitanza alla conferenza stampa al K-Art Hall del parco olimpico di Bangi-dong[9]. In poche ore, tutte le tracce entrano in classifica, posizionandosi ai primi posti nei siti di musica Olleh, Mnet, Daum, Soribada, Melon, Cyworld, Bugs, Monkey3 e altri[12], mentre viene diffuso il videoclip di The Red Shoes[13]: nel giro di tre giorni, il brano raggiunge il primo posto in tutte le classifiche musicali, compresa la settimanale iChart su Instiz, conseguendo un perfect all-kill[14]. In una settimana, i download digitali dell'album arrivano a 2.9 milioni[15]. Il 26 ottobre iniziano a circolare voci secondo le quali The Red Shoes sarebbe un plagio del brano del 2009 Here's Us di Nekta[16], ma la casa discografica smentisce[17]. Alla fine di ottobre, Modern Times raggiunge un totale di 38 255 copie fisiche vendute[18], mentre The Red Shoes 785 917 download digitali[19]. A novembre i download digitali dell'album arrivano a 4.73 milioni.

Il 20 dicembre 2013 l'album viene ripubblicato con il titolo Modern Times - Epilogue, contenente le nuove tracce Friday, scritta e arrangiata da IU, e Crayon, presente nel drama Yeppeun namja, per un totale di quindici[20]. La copertina[21] e il videoclip di Friday vengono rivelati il giorno prima dell'uscita[22]. Il brano è un duetto con Yijeong degli History, che compare nel video insieme al protagonista maschile, il modello Jang Ki-yong, a Janghyun delle Sunny Hill, a Yoon Hyun-sang e al manager di IU[22]. Due ore dopo l'uscita, Friday arriva al primo posto di Melon, Olleh, Bugs, Genie e Soribada[23], e in un giorno conquista le prime posizioni in tutte le classifiche, ripetendo il successo di The Red Shoes[24]. Anche Crayon entra in classifica, al decimo posto[24].

Il 16 gennaio 2014 Gaon pubblica il grafico del 2013 con la classifica dei singoli digitali, dei download e degli streaming online: IU figura nella prima con The Red Shoes, classificatosi al 73º posto[25], mentre in quella degli album più venduti, resa nota pochi giorni dopo, Modern Times è al 45º posto con 40 360 copie fisiche[26].

Modern Times is the third studio album by South Korean singer-songwriter IU. It was released on October 8, 2013, via LOEN Entertainment under its imprint LOEN Tree. Under the theme of "French Black",[1] the album departs from the singer's girlish image which established her as the "Nation's Sweetheart", by attempting various styles of music such as swing, jazz, and bossa nova.[2] Her first full-length record since Last Fantasy (2011), the album contains guest features and collaborations from several artists.[3]
