L'album si ispira alla Bomb Squad e ad Ice Cube.[1] Secondo il critico musicale Jason Birchmeier, l'artista si distingue dai suoi colleghi di New York e di Compton per la sua ambientazione radicata nel Texas:[1] grazie a ciò riesce a sfruttare la crudezza della sua realtà in modo molto teatrale,[1] affrontando scontati[3][4] temi classici del genere gangsta.[1][3][4][7] Secondo la critica specializzata, Mr. Scarface Is Back è il miglior album del rapper:[4] Birchmeier afferma che «è uno dei primi autentici capolavori dell'epoca gangsta».[1] Secondo RapReviews, «è una pietra miliare dell'hip hop».[4] Anche The Source elogia il disco e la tecnica di Scarcace,[7] concludendo che questa uscita «lo porta a un altro livello»:[7] il disco ne lancia infatti la fortunata carriera da solista,[4] lo pone tra i pionieri del genere[4] e lo proclama come «Re del Sud».[4] A Minute to Pray and a Second to Die e I'm Dead sono le tracce più apprezzate dalla critica.[1][4][5]

The album was supported by two singles: "Mr. Scarface" and "A Minute to Pray and a Second to Die". Both of these singles attained minor success on the charts.
