Dopo l'uscita di Take Me Home, primo singolo pubblicato nell'agosto 2001, la cantante ha pubblicato nel dicembre dello stesso anno Murder on the Dancefloor, per l'etichetta discografica Polydor. Il singolo raggiunse la posizione #2 in Inghilterra,[5] rimanendo in classifica per 23 settimane. Fu anche un ottimo successo in Australia, dove raggiunse la posizione numero tre,[6] rimanendo nella top 15 per venti settimane;[6] ottenne il disco di platino in Australia[7] e fu l'undicesimo disco più venduto del 2002.[8]

Il videoclip di Murder on the Dancefloor, diretto da Sophie Muller, si svolge durante un concorso di danza ai cui vincitori spettano un paio di scarpe d'oro e una cassa piena di soldi. Determinata a vincere, Ellis-Bextor fa in modo di infortunare o far squalificare gli altri concorrenti, avvelenando un giudice e seducendone un altro, fino ad arrivare alla vittoria con grande dispiacere dei concorrenti "sopravvissuti".

"Murder on the Dancefloor" is a song written by Gregg Alexander and Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Alexander and Matt Rowe for Ellis-Bextor's first album, Read My Lips (2001). Released on 3 December 2001, the song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and stayed on the chart for 23 weeks. The song became a top-10 hit worldwide, charting within the top three in Australia, New Zealand, and four European countries. In the United States, where the song was serviced to radio in September 2002, the single reached number nine on the Billboard Dance Singles Sales chart. "Murder on the Dancefloor" is reported to have been the most played song in Europe in 2002.[1]
