Il brano è stato pubblicato dalla cantante attraverso lo pseudonimo di Ashley O e include un campionamento del singolo Head Like a Hole dei Nine Inch Nails, scritto dal frontman Trent Reznor, che è qui accreditato come unico autore. La produzione di On a Roll è stata affidata al team di produzione The Invisible Men. Il lato B del singolo è Right Where It Belongs, una traccia dei Nine Inch Nails del 2005, anch'essa scritta e composta da Trent Reznor.[1]


Promozione


On a Roll è stato presentato durante la terza e ultima puntata della quinta stagione della serie televisiva Black Mirror, intitolata Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too e distribuita il 5 giugno 2019.[2] Il 30 giugno 2019 la cantante si è esibita per la prima volta con On a Roll al Glastonbury Festival, nei panni del personaggio di Ashley O.[3]

"On a Roll" is a song recorded by American singer Miley Cyrus under the moniker "Ashley O" (her character in the Black Mirror episode "Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too"). It is an adaptation of the 1989 Nine Inch Nails song "Head Like a Hole". The episode was originally released on June 5, 2019, and the song was later distributed as a standalone single by RCA Records and The Null Corporation on June 14, 2019. The B-side, "Right Where I Belong", is based on the 2005 Nine Inch Nails song "Right Where It Belongs". Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor approved of the adaptations, and released Black Mirror-themed merchandise to coincide with the episode's release.[2] The song was ranked 28th on the 100 Best Songs of 2019 list by Billboard.[3] The song was not released to radio in the US.[4]
