L'album ebbe presto un grande successo e diventò il più noto lavoro della carriera del rapper. Vendette oltre le 500 000 copie nella prima settimana di uscita, debuttando così alla posizione n.1. Risultò alla fine vendere oltre le 6 milioni di copie soltanto negli States e fu certificato prima disco d'oro e poi triplo disco di platino. In tutto il mondo, il disco vendette più di 12 milioni di copie.
I featuring sono quelli degli artisti Murder Inc. Records Ashanti, Black Child e Caddillac Tah, e di Missy Elliott e Tupac. Hanno poi collaborato artisti emergenti come le cantanti R&B Tweet e Charli Baltimore. Tutte le tracce sono state prodotte da Irv Gotti.

Pain Is Love is the third studio album by American rapper Ja Rule. Executive produced by Irv Gotti, it was released on October 2, 2001 by Murder Inc. Records and distributed by Def Jam Recordings. Although, the album received a mixed reception from critics, Pain Is Love debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was supported by four singles: "Livin' It Up", "I'm Real (Murder Remix)", "Always on Time" and "Down Ass Bitch". It was certified triple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for selling over 3,000,000 copies. Pain is Love received numerous awards and nominations including a nomination for Best Rap Album at the 44th Grammy Awards.
