Pretty Vacant è stato il terzo singolo della punk band britannica dei Sex Pistols. Fu pubblicato dalla Virgin Records il 2 luglio 1977[2]. Questa canzone portò i Pistols alla loro prima (ed ultima) apparizione al programma musicale inglese Top of the Pops[2]. Il riff del bassista Glen Matlock è ispirato a quello della canzone S.O.S. degli ABBA, dopo che la band lo aveva ascoltato alla radio. La tematica del brano si fa beffe della disoccupazione giovanile dilagante all'epoca: «We're so pretty, oh so pretty! / Vacant / But now... / And we don't care!» ("Siamo così carinamente, oh così carinamente/ Disoccupati/ ma ora.../ Non ce ne frega niente!").

Nel 1981 la canzone fu usata per il film di Ralph Bakshi American Pop.
La B-side del singolo è una cover di No Fun di The Stooges che dura sette minuti, ovvero il doppio della versione originale.
Pretty Vacant fu anche usata nel 1994 come sigla per un breve-live di uno show televisivo comico di nome The Vacant Lot.
Nel marzo 2005, il giornale britannico Q Magazine stilò la classifica de I 100 migliori pezzi da suonare con la chitarra, in cui Pretty Vacant si è piazzata al 26º posto[3].
Nel 2007, uscì una nuova versione di Pretty Vacant per il videogioco Skate. Per l'occasione il produttore Chris Thomas riunì in studio John Lydon, Steve Jones e Paul Cook, mentre non partecipò alla registrazione Glen Matlock.

"Pretty Vacant" is a song by the English punk rock band the Sex Pistols. It was released on 2 July 1977 as the band's third single and was later featured on their only album, Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols, released during that same year. The song reached No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart and marked the band's first appearance on the British chart music TV programme Top of the Pops. The song gained attention for vocalist John Lydon's phrasing of the word "vacant", emphasising the last syllable to sound like the vulgar word cunt.[2][3] According to bassist Glen Matlock, the song's main riff was inspired by hearing "SOS" by ABBA.[4] The B-side of the single was a cover of the Stooges' "No Fun", which the band played on the spot without a proper rehearsal. It was taken from demo sessions recorded by producer Dave Goodman. In an interview for the June, 2022 issue of British music magazine Uncut Glen Matlock said that ”Pretty Vacant, which is my song and my lyrics, I took inspiration from Richard Hell’s Blank Generation. But I kind of misunderstood what his song was all about. You gotta put the songs in the context of what was going on for a bloke like me in mid-70s London, with the three-day week and the IRA bombings and power cuts, against the fact I was a young man who met some interesting people who was trying to form a rock’n’roll band.
