Il titolo dell'album si riferisce alle Sette Chiese dell'Apocalisse. L'introduzione del brano d'apertura The Exorcist contiene un campionamento dell'album Tubular Bells di Mike Oldfield del 1973, usato per il film L'esorcista. L'album fu registrato durante lo Spring break dei membri del gruppo, dato che entrambi frequentavano all'epoca la scuola.

Seven Churches ist das Debütalbum der amerikanischen Metal-Band Possessed. Es gilt als eines der wegweisenden Alben des Death Metal[1], nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil die Genrebezeichnung oft auf das gleichnamige Stück des Albums zurückgeführt wird[2]. Allerdings war sie auch der Titel einer 1984 über Noise Records veröffentlichten Split-LP mit unter anderem Hellhammer[3] und findet sich auch noch vor der Veröffentlichung von Seven Churches im Punk-Fanzine Maximumrocknroll[4], ebenso die Bezeichnung deathmetalers für die Anhänger dieser Musik[5].

Seven Churches is the debut album by American death metal band Possessed. The title of the album refers to the Seven Churches of Asia mentioned in the Book of Revelation. "The Exorcist" begins with producer Randy Burns' version of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells, arranged and performed as it was in the 1973 horror film of the same name. Seven Churches is widely regarded as the first death metal album to exist, and About.com named it one of the ten essential albums of the genre.[1] Jeff Becerra was only 16 when the album was recorded.[4]
