Il disco

Il nome che Buckley aveva scelto per l'album era My Sweetheart the Drunk; in sede di pubblicazione fu aggiunto Sketches for ("abbozzi per") proprio per enfatizzare la natura incompiuta dell'opera.
L'album fu prodotto da Nicholas Hill e Tom Verlaine (ex Television) che dichiarò di considerare My Sweetheart un album "eccellente". La cura e la distribuzione dell'album sono state portate avanti dalla Columbia Records e da Mary Guibert, madre dell'artista, che alla sua morte ha preso in mano il patrimonio artistico (ed economico) del figlio e continua a gestirlo.
Il tema predominante dell'album è l'amore. Le tracce dei due album sono infatti quasi tutte incentrate su questo tema, così caro a Buckley e da lui trattato in maniera sempre anticonvenzionale.

Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk is a compilation album by the American singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley, released by Columbia Records on May 26, 1998, a year after his death. It comprises recordings Buckley made with producer Tom Verlaine in 1996 and 1997, along with alternative mixes and demos. It was released after extensive negotiation with Buckley's mother, the owner of his estate, who feared that Sony, owner of Columbia, was trying to exploit his legacy. It received positive reviews.
