Sunflower è stata accolta positivamente dalla critica. Per Billboard, Gil Kaufman l'ha definita «una ballata funky e sognante» dopo averne ascoltato un'anteprima.[1] Israel Daramola di Spin ha definito Sunflower «gloriosa e piena di sentimento».[18] Patrick Doyle di Rolling Stone ha reputato il brano «iper-accattivante» come «un diario di una relazione rocciosa, che fa da linea tra hip-hop e dream-pop».[3] Sara Salamat di Bam! Smack! Pow! l'ha chiamata «carina, allegra e piacevole».[19]

Sunflower ha debuttato alla 9ª posizione della Billboard Hot 100 statunitense, diventando la quinta top ten di Post Malone e la seconda di Swae Lee. Durante la sua prima settimana di disponibilità ha accumulato 24 000 copie digitali, 24,2 milioni di riproduzioni streaming e 13,2 milioni di ascoltatori radiofonici, entrando alla 6ª posizione della Digital Songs e all'8ª della Streaming Songs.[21] Ha in seguito raggiunto la vetta della classifica, rendendola la terza numero uno di Post Malone e la prima di Swae Lee da solista, dopo aver regnato con Black Beatles come metà del duo Rae Sremmurd; è quindi divenuto il primo artista ad ottenere una numero uno dapprima come membro di un duo o di un gruppo e poi da solista da Justin Timberlake, che ci è riuscito nel 2000 e nel 2016.[22] Ha completato trentatré settimane non consecutive tra i primi dieci posti, condividendo ai tempi il record di canzone più longeva nella regione con Shape of You di Ed Sheeran e Girls like You dei Maroon 5 con Cardi B.[23]

"Sunflower" (alternatively titled "Sunflower (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse)")[3] is a song performed by American rappers and singers Post Malone and Swae Lee. It was released as a single from the soundtrack to the 2018 animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,[4] and is included on Post Malone's third studio album Hollywood's Bleeding (2019). The single was released on October 19, 2018.[5] It became Malone's third and Lee's first song as a soloist to top the US Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. The song ranked in the top ten of the chart for 33 weeks, at the time sharing the record for the most such weeks with "Girls Like You" by Maroon 5 featuring Cardi B and "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran (Post Malone would later break this record with his 2019 single "Circles").[6][7][8][9] "Sunflower" also reached number one in Australia, Canada, Malaysia, and New Zealand, as well as the top ten in twelve additional countries. It is certified Diamond in the US and Canada. In November 2022, the song set the record as the highest certified song ever by the RIAA with 17-times platinum status in the United States, meaning it accumulated 17 million equivalent song units.[10]
