Uscito a sette anni di distanza da FutureSex/LoveSounds, l'album vanta collaborazioni con Timbaland e Jay-Z ed è stato anticipato a gennaio dal primo singolo Suit & Tie, a cui ha fatto seguito il mese seguente Mirrors.

L'album è salito in vetta alla Billboard 200 con un debutto di 968.000 copie vendute negli Stati Uniti, registrando il più alto debutto del 2013.[16] Il presidente della RCA Records in un'intervista ha rivelato che dopo una promozione strategica le aspettative dell'etichetta erano di vendere circa 500.000-600.000 copie e che nessuno si sarebbe aspettato un tale successo.[17] The 20/20 Experience è stato eletto album più venduto della prima metà del 2013 negli Stati Uniti d'America, vendendo oltre 2.5 milioni di copie.[18]

The 20/20 Experience is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Justin Timberlake. It was released on March 15, 2013, by RCA Records, as the follow-up to his second studio album FutureSex/LoveSounds (2006). It is considered the first half of a two-piece project, later being supplemented by his fourth studio album The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 (2013). The album incorporates neo soul styles with elements of older soul music; its lyrics discuss themes of romance and sex. Production is handled by Timbaland, Timberlake, who also serves as the album's executive producer, and Jerome "J-Roc" Harmon, with Rob Knox contributing to the album's deluxe edition.
