Dopo aver collaborato a qualche brano assieme,[7][9] nel gennaio 2002 i due annunciano l'uscita dell'album in una conferenza stampa a New York.[10][11] Il 22 febbraio, l'album è bootleggato online[12] e la data di pubblicazione è anticipata di una settimana per combattere la pirateria.[13] Si prevede che lo sforzo sia un grande successo commerciale,[7] tuttavia, nel febbraio 2002, una fonte anonima invia un filmato al Chicago Sun-Times ritraente R. Kelly e una ragazzina minorenne in un contesto sessuale.[9][14] R. Kelly proclama la propria innocenza[15] e subito dopo la Def Jam decide di tagliare ogni piano di promozione per l'album, inclusi i videoclip musicali per i tre singoli[6] e il tour inizialmente programmato.[6][16] Jay-Z rifiuta di apparire in qualsiasi cosa abbia a che fare con R. Salvo qualche brano, l'album è «sotto gli standard ed è uno dei peggiori lavori di entrambi»,[1][3][7] non riuscendo nell'obbiettivo di coniugare i due mondi.[3][6][7] Interamente prodotto dai Trackmasters, l'album debutta al secondo posto della Billboard 200 vendendo 223 000 copie[18] ed è ritenuto un flop commerciale, vendendo complessivamente meno della metà delle singole opere di entrambi gli artisti. Nel giugno seguente, R. Kelly è arrestato con 21 capi d'imputazione per pornografia infantile in seguito alla conferma di alcuni testimoni sul fatto che la ragazzina nel sex tape abbia 14 anni.[19] Nel 2008 è assolto da tutte le accuse.[20]

A causa della collaborazione di Jay-Z con R. Kelly, cantante che arrivava da un recente scandalo sessuale con una minorenne e che in passato era sospettato di aver abusato di Aaliyah,[6][21][22] lo storico fondatore della Roc-A-Fella Dame Dash, legato ad Aaliyah in precedenza, decide di non prendere parte al progetto.[21][22] Secondo lo stesso Dash, il disco è tra le cause che porteranno alla rottura dei rapporti tra lui e Jay-Z e alla conseguente chiusura della storica label Roc-A-Fella.[22]

The Best of Both Worlds is the first collaborative album by Jay-Z and R. Kelly.[6] It was released on March 19, 2002 through Roc-A-Fella, The Island Def Jam Music Group, Rockland Records and Jive Records. The production on the album was primarily handled by R. Kelly and Poke and Tone, but also features production by Megahertz and Charlemagne. The album also features guest appearances by Beanie Siegel, Lil' Kim and Devin the Dude.
