Nel marzo 2017 è stata annunciata la partecipazione di Lady Gaga al Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in sostituzione della cantante Beyoncé, a causa della gravidanza di quest'ultima.[7] Durante la prima delle due esibizioni al festival, avvenuta il 15 aprile 2017, la cantante ha portato al debutto il singolo:[8]

«Sono così emozionata per la prossima parte dello spettacolo perché ho cercato di tenerlo nascosto per tutto questo tempo. Sono stata in studio di registrazione e mi piacerebbe debuttare un nuovo brano inedito, The Cure»

In seguito all'esibizione, il brano è stato reso disponibile sulle varie piattaforme digitali,[1] per poi essere stato inviato alle stazioni radiofoniche statunitensi a partire dal 25 aprile 2017.[9]

The song originated from a positive vibe between the collaborators, created as a response to atrocities happening around the world. It was developed in Los Angeles, California, where Gaga and her team were working on some music before the singer started filming the 2018 remake of A Star Is Born. Consisting of finger snaps and an electronic pop beat, "The Cure" is composed around an R&B sound. Lyrically, the song talks about the healing effects of love, with the singer advocating herself as the one administering 'the cure'.
