L'etichetta Sympathy For The Record Industry aveva già pubblicato 3 delle 4 tracce come primo singolo delle Hole nel mese di aprile 1990, mentre Turpentine, la prima canzone in assoluto ad essere registrata dal gruppo, non era mai stata pubblicata.
Nel booklet si trovano un'intervista del gruppo al magazine Flipside (#68, settembre/ottobre 1990), foto, flyers e testi scritti a mano.
I produttori sono il gruppo stesso e Falling James Moreland, leader dei Leaving Trains ed allora marito di Courtney Love.

The First Session is an EP by American alternative rock band Hole, released on August 26, 1997 on Sympathy for the Record Industry. The EP features the entire recording of the band's first studio session on March 17, 1990 and also a twenty-page booklet focusing on the band's early career prior to the release of their debut studio album, Pretty on the Inside (1991). The EP marked Hole's final release on Sympathy for the Record Industry.[es] The First Session
