Il disco


Musicalmente, il disco rappresenta l'apice della fase sperimentale psichedelica del gruppo, con la fusione di generi differenti quali folk rock, rock psichedelico, musica country, musica elettronica, baroque pop e jazz.[3][4] Nello specifico, l'influenza del genere country è evidente in molte delle tracce sull'album e anticipa la svolta totale verso il country rock che i Byrds intraprenderanno con il loro successivo disco.[2][5] In aggiunta, The Notorious Byrd Brothers vede il produttore Gary Usher fare ampio uso di vari effetti di studio e tecniche produttive sperimentali.[6][7][8] Infine, con quest'album i Byrds introdussero per la prima volta nella loro musica il suono della pedal steel guitar e del sintetizzatore Moog.[7][9]

Le sessioni di registrazione per l'album si svolsero nella seconda metà del 1967 e furono funestate da tensioni e dissidi, che ebbero come risultato la fuoriuscita dalla band di due membri del gruppo.[9] David Crosby venne licenziato nell'ottobre 1967, mentre Michael Clarke lasciò il gruppo nel mezzo delle sedute d'incisione, per poi ritornare temporaneamente in formazione al fine di completare le registrazioni ed andarsene nuovamente finito il lavoro.[10][11] Anche Gene Clark tornò nel gruppo per qualche tempo, andandosene via definitivamente poco tempo dopo.

Alla sua uscita, l'album raggiunse la posizione numero 47 nella classifica statunitense Billboard Top LPs, e la numero 12 nella britannica Official Albums Chart.[12][13] La cover del brano di Gerry Goffin & Carole King Goin' Back venne pubblicata su singolo nell'ottobre 1967 riscuotendo un moderato successo.[7] Nonostante The Notorious Byrd Brothers fosse stato ben accolto dalla critica, il disco ebbe un successo commerciale non esaltante, in particolare negli Stati Uniti.[14] Tuttavia, l'album è oggi riconosciuto da più parti come uno dei migliori dischi dei Byrds, e uno di quelli più sperimentali ed audaci artisticamente tra quelli incisi dalla band.[4][6]

Januar 1968 auf dem Label Columbia Records. In den Vereinigten Staaten erreichte das Album #47 der Pop-Charts, in Großbritannien #12. Trotz guter Kritiken hatte The Notorious Byrd Brothers die bis dahin schlechtesten Verkaufszahlen eines Byrds-Albums, was es nicht daran hinderte ein Rockklassiker zu werden. So erreichte das Album auf der 2003 vom Rolling Stone zusammengestellten Liste der 500 besten Alben aller Zeiten Platz 170.[1]

The Notorious Byrd Brothers is the fifth album by the American rock band the Byrds, and was released in January 1968, on Columbia Records.[1][2] The album represents the pinnacle of the Byrds' late-‘60s musical experimentation, with the band blending together elements of psychedelia, folk rock, country, electronic music, baroque pop, and jazz.[3][4][5] With producer Gary Usher, they made extensive use of a number of studio effects and production techniques, including phasing, flanging, and spatial panning.[6][7][8] The Byrds also introduced the sound of the pedal steel guitar and the Moog modular synthesizer into their music, making it one of the first LP releases on which the Moog appears.[7][9]
