Le origini dell'album risalgono alla fine degli anni settanta. Dopo la pubblicazione nel 1975 di Born to Run ed il successivo successo ottenuto Springsteen si trovò in un contenzioso sul controllo artistico della propria musica con il proprio manager Mike Appel che non gli permise di entrare in uno studio di registrazione per un intero anno.[4]

Sciolto il nodo entrò in studio per iniziare le registrazioni dei nuovi brani affiancato dal produttore Jon Landau. Dopo un anno di lavoro in cui scrisse una settantina di canzoni ne scelse dieci tra loro collegate e tra le più sofferte per il nuovo album Darkness on the Edge of Town pubblicato nel 1978.[4]

The Promise viene considerato il disco perduto, le registrazioni risalgono a quel periodo con qualche ritocco nel 2010. Alcuni brani pubblicati sono stati spesso suonati dal vivo, pubblicati su bootleg o in versioni diverse su altre raccolte come la title track reincisa nel 1999 su 18 Tracks.[4]

The Promise is a studio album by American singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, released November 16, 2010 on Columbia Records.[1] The album is a collection of previously unreleased songs which were recorded during the Darkness on the Edge of Town sessions in 1977–1978, with some vocals and additional instrumentation overdubs recorded in 2010. It was released in 2CD and 3LP formats.[2] The album is also available as part of the box set The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story.[3][4] The two-CD version of the release entered the UK Albums Chart at number 7.[5] It had been in production for many years and was originally scheduled to be released for the 30th anniversary in 2008. The Promise debuted at #16 on the Billboard 200, while the box set, The Promise: The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story, debuted at #27.[6]
